Pulmonary Hypertension Of The Lung

Hypertension or the problems of high blood pressure are some of the most common cardiovascular problems that are plaguing mankind these days. Hypertension is almost synonymous to high blood pressure, so a question may arise regarding the meaning of high blood pressure.
Heart is the primary pumping station of the body that pumps the nutrient and oxygen supplying fluid throughout the body via the arteries. Now when the blood flows from the heart to the various organs via the arteries, the blood exerts a certain amount of force on the walls of the arteries, this pressure is known as the blood pressure. Some times the pressure exerted by the blood is so high that the patient is said to suffer from high blood pressure. Hypertension or high blood pressure is also known as the “silent killer” because of the fact that there are no general symptoms which shows that a person is suffering from hypertension.
Most of the times there are certain associated disorders that can be seen in patients who suffer from hypertension and gradually they die because of these disorders. There are quite a few types of hypertension f which pulmonary hypertension is the most notable.
The lung is a highly vascularised organ and it is supplied by numerous arteries which form a dense network of capillaries around the alveoli. Deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle of the heart flows from the arteries to the capillaries and while passing through these capillaries the blood gets oxygenated once more.
Sometimes due to various causes the capillaries supplying blood to the alveoli may become constricted. These capillaries may even become closed due to certain reasons, as a result of which the blood flow through the capillaries is increased; this ultimately results in the rising of blood pressure in the capillaries of the lung.
The signs and symptoms of pulmonary hypertension is subtle in the early stages but as the condition progresses, the patient might start suffering after several years of acquiring the disease. As the condition of the pulmonary hypertension progresses the conditions become worse, few of these conditions have been listed below:
• The patients suffering from pulmonary hypertension always suffer from a shortness of breath, which is also known as dyspnea in the medical terms. • The patients get fatigued very easily. • Some of the patients even suffer from spells of dizziness and may faint often. • In certain cases the patients may suffer from mild to severe chest pain. • Some of the patients notice a swelling in the ankles the legs and eventually in the abdomen. • Most of the patients get a bluish color on their skin and lips that takes place due to cyanosis.
