Acquired Pulmonary Hypertension

The problem of pulmonary hypertension has plagued mankind for a long time, hypertension is nowadays a very common medical condition seen in people of almost all age groups. Hypertension or high blood pressure is mostly found in people who are middle aged. Before coming to the topic of high blood pressure let us discuss what we mean by blood pressure. Our body is like a big machine that works meticulously and the different organs are the different parts of that machine that work in tandem and thereby help in maintaining the homeostasis of the body. The heart is one of he most important organs of the body that acts as a pumping station, which pumps blood through the different parts of the body. The blood is pumped through the pipelines of he body or the arterioles, the walls of the arterioles are highly elastic and can contract and expand according to the force with which blood flows through them. When the heart contracts and pumps blood through the arterioles, the blood exerts a certain amount of force through them, this force is called the blood pressure.

As the person grows old the walls of the arterioles contract and that result in the increasing of the pressure of the blood, this causes a weakening of the heart muscle as it has to perform harder in order to push blood through the arteries.

The factor with pulmonary hypertension is a bit different, lung is one of the most highly vascularised organs of the body, and there are a number of capillaries that form a joint meshwork around the lungs to give it maximum blood supply. Sometimes due to heavy smoking and some other factors, the passage of he capillaries get constricted. This event results in the increment of pressure in the in the capillaries. As the blood pressure in the capillaries increase therefore the heart ventricle muscles have to work harder to push blood through the capillaries.

The heart muscles become very weak while trying to push the blood through the constricted capillaries of the lungs, sometimes this may result in the total failure of the heart muscles and the consequence is the mortality of the patient.

Acquired pulmonary artery branch stenosis is caused by pulmonary thromboembolism, and the patient is seen to have a condition similar to aortic dissection. This usually known as the blockage of he pulmonary artery or one of its branches, this blockage maybe caused by when a venous thrombus clot is dislocated from its position and creates a blockage in the pulmonary artery, thereby restricting the blood flow through this artery.

Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, pain in the chest while breathing, in some severe cases the patients may simply collapse.
